"Head Tripped" ~ 14 ~ Heero lay on the bed with Duo, careful not to touch the boy to whom he had just revealed his love. He closed his eyes, trying to make himself fall asleep. "Not working," he mumbled to himself. He tried the deep breathing exercises Wufei had taught him, willing away the tension in his feet, his legs, his arms, his chest.... In his dream Heero found himself asleep on the bed in his room, as before. He woke himself, but lay still. The boy in his previous dreams did not appear, so Heero called to him. "Boy!" "Boy! Where are you? I'm ready to go with you." Heero waited. In the gloom of near dawn, Heero became aware of a shape at the foot of his bed. Gradually the form of a boy became clearer. "Boy," Heero said. Is that you? The boy I've dreamt of before?" The boy said nothing. "I - I'm ready to go with you now." Silence. "Do - do you still want me?" No motion, no sound came from the shape at the foot of Heero's bed. "I'll go with you, if you still want me. I want - to see whatever you want to show me." Violet-tinged eyes appeared in the murkiness. "Come." Heero stood, walked to the end of the bed, and followed the boy.
"Trowa?" "The tension in this house is enough to drive anyone to distraction, Quatre. That alone is enough to make me think that something supernatural is going on here. Look at us: Duo, the happy-go-lucky pilot, is angry at all of us. Heero is giving into his emotions - something that goes against the intense training J gave him. And Wufei is fighting Heero's attempt to help Duo. It's not like us to be at each other's throats like this." "No, it's not," Quatre said, looking out the window. He stood. "Hold me, Trowa." Trowa embraced his lover, pulling his head to his chest.
On the other side was a meadow, a clearing in the forest. Stars shone coldly on dew-covered grass through ragged clouds. Heero shivered in the night air. "Where are we?" Heero was wary. "Come." Heero let the boy lead him to the center of the meadow, where two stone slabs stood on rough hewn logs at waist height. Duo was asleep on one slab. The boy walked to the other slab and spoke to Heero. "Lay down." The boy's deep voice was not an invitation, but a directive. Heero forced himself to lay down, the stone cold against his shoulder blades through his shirt. A shaft of moonlight struggled through dark clouds, pinning him to the stone slab. Beside him, the boy laughed softly. Heero turned his head to the side to look at Duo. "You want him, don't you?" The boy spoke gently, but Heero tensed at the sound of his voice. "Duo?" Heero called his friend's name. "He can't hear you. He's asleep." "Duo! Duo! Wake up, Duo!" Heero called insistently. The demon-boy standing beside Heero laughed roughly. "I told you, he's asleep. I brought you here to show you want you wanted to see." The demon waved his hand and the stone slab with Duo vanished in smoke. Heero gasped. The demon ripped the shirt he was wearing off and cast it to the ground. He mounted the remaining slab, one knee on either side of Heero's hips. He cackled loudly. As the demon reached for Heero's shirt, the Gundam pilot reacted instinctively. He brought his foot up and kicked at the demon's groin with all his might. The demon fell backward, howling, hissing. Heero rolled off the slab and yelled as loud as he could as he stood. "Duoooo! Duoooo! Duoooo!" "He can't hear you!" The demon spat the words viciously, his voice suddenly deep, now sounding like three voices speaking in unison. He stood and glowered at Heero. Heero glared back at the demon and planted his feet firmly, ready for hand-to-hand combat as the demon ran at him. Just as the demon reached him, Heero lunged, tumbling through the chill night air. An unearthly, high-pitched laugh sounded above Heero's head. Heero hit the ground hard. He scrambled up, crouching, looking quickly around. He screamed Duo's name again. Malevolent laugher filled the air. "Duoooo! Duooo!" Heero yelled his lover's name over and over again. He felt a tap on his shoulder and swung wildly around. Another tap. He kicked backward, throwing all of his weight, elbows rigid. He fell to the ground again. Heero picked himself up quickly. Another tap on his shoulder. He whirled around, throwing himself at his enemy. He grabbed at nothing, fell hard. "You'll never find him!" The demon shrieked. "Never!" TBC |
